Young's modulus
Also: elastic modulus, E
A material measure of axial stiffness in its linear elastic range.
It is the slope of stress versus strain under specified conditions; geometry separately controls part stiffness.
- Units
- pascal (Pa)
- Formula
E = σ/ε
Example At equal geometry and load, a higher-E material extends less.
Common misconception Young's modulus measures stiffness, not yield strength or toughness.
