Yield strength
Also: yield stress
The stress at which substantial permanent deformation begins by a specified criterion.
Yield values depend on material condition, direction, temperature, test method, and definition such as 0.2% offset.
- Units
- pascal, commonly MPa
Example A 240 MPa assumed yield divided by 30 MPa stress gives safety factor 8 for that mode.
Common misconception Staying below handbook yield does not cover fatigue, buckling, creep, or stress concentrations.
