Tracking error reflects plant dynamics, disturbances, sensing, delay, saturation, and controller design and is time-dependent.
Example A slide lagging 4 mm behind its reference during acceleration has −4 mm position error under that convention.
Common misconception Small final error does not imply small peak error throughout the move.
