Static friction
Also: stiction
Friction that prevents relative sliding up to a limit.
Its magnitude adapts as needed up to approximately μ_sN; it is not always equal to that maximum.
- Units
- newton (N)
- Formula
|F_s| ≤ μ_sN
Example A wheel can transmit traction without slipping while demanded force stays below the limit.
Common misconception Static friction is not automatically μ_sN in every equilibrium problem.
