Finite-state machine
Also: FSM, state machine
A behavior model with named states and explicit rules for changing between them.
Next state is a function of current state and inputs; outputs depend on state alone or state plus input.
Example A robot moves from IDLE to MOVING on start and to FAULT on overcurrent.
Common misconception Every sensor value should not become a separate state; durable modes and transient data differ.
