Kinematic singularity
Also: singular configuration
A configuration where a mechanism loses an instantaneous motion direction or requires extreme joint rates.
The Jacobian loses rank; inverse kinematics and force transmission become ill-conditioned near the singularity.
Example A fully straight planar arm cannot instantaneously extend farther outward.
Common misconception A singularity is not merely a software crash or an unreachable point.
