Safety factor
Also: factor of safety
A ratio reserving strength or capacity beyond a calculated demand.
It compares a defined failure limit with a compatible calculated stress or load and must reflect uncertainty and consequence.
- Formula
SF = failure limit / applied demand
Example 240 MPa yield over 30 MPa nominal stress gives SF = 8.
Common misconception A large factor cannot repair the wrong failure model or unreliable material data.
