Measurement noise
Also: random noise
Unwanted variation that obscures the quantity of interest.
Noise is characterized by distribution, spectrum, correlation, and dependence on operating conditions; it is not synonymous with all error.
Example ADC readings fluctuating by two counts at a steady input show short-term noise.
Common misconception A smooth trace can still be biased, and averaging correlated noise may help little.
