Moving average
Also: boxcar average
A filter replacing each sample with the average of a recent window.
It reduces uncorrelated high-frequency noise but adds delay and has a frequency response with sidelobes and zeros.
- Formula
y[k] = (1/N)Σx[k−i]
Example A 5-sample average smooths ADC readings but delays a step.
Common misconception A moving average does not remove bias and does not preserve every transient.
