Mechanical power
Also: shaft power
The rate at which a force or torque does mechanical work.
Translational power is F·v and rotational power is τ·ω using aligned components and consistent instantaneous values.
- Units
- watt (W)
- Formula
P = F·v = τ·ω
Example 6 N at 0.5 m/s delivers 3 W.
Common misconception Maximum torque and maximum speed ratings usually occur at different operating points and cannot simply be multiplied.
