Heartbeat
Also: liveness message
A periodic indication that a component is still communicating or making specified progress.
Heartbeat period, sequence, payload, timeout, and independence determine which failures it can reveal.
Example A controller emits a counter every 100 ms; missing several entries triggers degraded mode.
Common misconception A heartbeat proves only its defined liveness condition, not correct sensing or actuation.
