Flyback diode
Also: freewheel diode, catch diode
A diode that gives inductive current a safe path when a switch turns off.
It clamps the inductive voltage by recirculating current, with polarity reverse-biased during normal energization.
Example A diode across a relay coil limits the turn-off voltage seen by its transistor.
Common misconception The diode does not eliminate stored energy; it redirects and dissipates it over time.
