One independent coordinate needed to describe a system's configuration.
Constraints remove degrees of freedom; mechanism mobility depends on independent constraints, not just joint count.
Example A planar rigid body has x, y, and rotation: three DOF.
Common misconception Every joint does not necessarily add one independent usable degree of freedom.
