Degraded mode
Also: graceful degradation
A deliberate reduced-capability operating state used after a fault or loss of confidence.
It specifies retained functions, tighter limits, annunciation, evidence, entry conditions, and recovery or shutdown criteria.
Example A robot slows and uses encoders briefly after camera loss, then stops if uncertainty grows too large.
Common misconception Continuing normally while ignoring a failed input is not a defined degraded mode.
