Code that accesses shared state and must not be interleaved with conflicting access.
Protection may disable interrupts briefly, use locks, or use atomic operations; duration must remain bounded.
Example Reading a multi-byte counter updated by an ISR may require a protected snapshot.
Common misconception Marking data volatile does not make a multi-step update atomic.
