Clearance fit
Also: running fit
A fit where the hole remains larger than the shaft across allowed sizes.
Minimum clearance is smallest hole minus largest shaft; positive clearance permits assembly and motion but affects play.
- Formula
C_min = H_min − S_max
Example An 8.10 mm minimum hole with 8.00 mm maximum shaft has at least 0.10 mm diametral clearance.
Common misconception More clearance is not always better; excess play harms alignment and positioning.
