Checksum
Also: error-detecting code
A value computed from message data to detect likely corruption.
Coverage depends on algorithm and error model; checksums detect but generally do not correct errors or authenticate senders.
Example A receiver recomputes a CRC and rejects a frame whose value differs.
Common misconception A valid checksum does not prove data are fresh, authentic, or semantically plausible.
