Clearance that allows an input to reverse slightly before the output follows.
Gear tooth, screw, or joint clearance creates a dead zone and direction-dependent position error, especially during reversals.
Example A camera gear may turn several degrees before the platform reverses.
Common misconception Feedback cannot recover position information hidden inside unmeasured backlash without additional sensing or modeling.
